Spring is here! And soon the days will be getting longer – so it is time to take back the outdoors for one of our favourite past times… entertaining friends and family. And while a seat with a favourite drink in hand is usually all that’s needed for the adults, kids need a little bit more on offer. Here’s our five ideas below for ensuring every one – of all ages – has a great time next time you’re on hosting duty.
Set up a food station
Children can eat A LOT, and having plenty of food to eat is a really easy way to keep them busy, especially if there are some DIY options available. Think sweet dips and sprinkles for bananas on popsicle sticks, cupcakes ready to ice, mini hot dogs, sliders, fruit skewers and more! Don’t forget about a few different drinks (soda water that can be easily flavoured by stuffing in plenty of fruit), paper cups and a bin for rubbish.
Bring in the indoors, out
With the evenings still a little chilly, why not grab the sleeping bags, picnic rugs and outdoor pillows for an almost real-life campout! The kids will love it. And for extra brownie points, you could set up a sheet for shadow puppets with a torch, or even get the projector out back for a night time movie screening (with buttery popcorn a must).
Don’t forget to encourage story-telling around the ‘camp-fire’ (a lantern with red cellophane should do the trick) for that ultimate night time experience.
Hire giant games
Fancy a game of giant Jenga, connect 4, snakes and ladders or chess? There are plenty of hire companies that rent out extra-large versions of our favourite board games, and they could just be the perfect added attraction to keep the kids entertained for hours (and probably the adults too!)
Or, if you want to have items at the ready (for those last minute occasions) Kmart has some great options for outdoor play equipment, like an inflatable bouncy castle, mini golf, ring toss and more.
Set up an obstacle course
Depending on the size of your backyard, an obstacle course could be a great way to get children of all ages to burn off some energy. And it doesn’t need to be hard to set up!
From some strategically-placed brooms that have to be slalomed, hula-hoops to hop through, sock bag throw, chair ‘army crawl’ and pool noodle limbo – there are plenty of items you can find around the home (and in the garage) that can be turned into an epic relay course.
Don’t forget the stop watch for some timed runs – the bigger kids (a.k.a the grown-ups) will no doubt love trying to beat each other.
Your ‘any-weather’ zone
The weather is still pretty unpredictable in spring, so it always pays to have an indoor entertaining option available. And with a Fresco Shade you have the perfect opportunity to put out all the board games and let the kids claim the space for their own.
It’s times like that when it is definitely handy to have an extra ‘living room’ that can be used all year-round, so you’re never caught out when the crowds arrive.
