Canopy Awning Buyers Guide

Reinvent Your Outdoor Space: Canopy Awning Buyers Guide

Looking to make the most of your outdoor space? Forget the deck and the BBQ – that’s just too 1970s and impractical for New Zealand’s winter! As for indoor/outdoor flow, why go for passé transitions when you can have an entire, tricked-out room outdoors? Think fireplace, outdoor rugs and couches… the whole works, fully-functional and comfortable all-year-round. And the best bit is it doesn’t need to break the bank.

Everybody could do with more space, but with current property prices, it makes sense to stay put and work with what you’ve got. The happy-medium is creating that outdoor space that lets you expand your horizons, get more natural light and escape the stuffy gloom of house confinement during winter. That’s where a canopy awning comes in.

This guide helps you choose the right canopy awning for your home and enjoy your outdoor area, whatever the weather.

1. What to look for when evaluating different Canopy Awning Providers

In recent years there has been an increase of new entrants into the Canopy and Awning market. While we certainly think having more options to choose from is a good thing, it’s imperative to research the company and understand how long they have been in the industry for. Some newer entrants are unfortunately making fraudulent claims about their length of ‘experience’ in the industry. If you have doubts, you can check when the company was incorporated by visiting the New Zealand Companies  office.

Additionally, you can check when the company registered it’s website using the domain name commission. Fortunately, when we claim to have been in business for over 20 years – we actually mean it! We began designing our canopy awning systems in 1998. Since then we have been continually innovating and making improvements to our design and engineering process. We’ve certainly learnt a lot about what works and what doesn’t. This is certainly something to consider when evaluating newer entrants to the market.

We recommend a supplier of outdoor solutions who has been in the industry for some time with access to their own manufacturing expertise and a robust track record of customer success (such as industry awards). Having a showroom and mobile team of helpful consultants is a must. Ask to see canopies in your area that have been recently installed. The capability and reputation of the installation team is a great question to ask and drill into – such as examples and references.

PVC roofing material blocks much of the heat and 99% of UV rays, creating a cool haven in hot summer months. Alternatives, such as polycarbonate, do little to reduce heat and glare and you may find the area is unusable on hot days over the summer. Other more translucent fabrics may let in more light but could also mean more heat and glare. Look for materials that are easy to clean and will last the distance. Consider potential noise levels. Some roof options such as polycarb are noisy in the rain and wind. Will your new outdoor room be near a bedroom or living room? See Where Should My Canopy Awning Be Installed?  for further advice on where to locate your canopy awning. Finally, ask about the canopy frame. Be aware that steel is stronger than aluminium and is far less likely to dent or warp (there is a reason bridges are built from steel rather than aluminium).

Curtains and sides turn the canopy into an outdoor room. There are many different options for side screens, some are more weather proof than others, some are quick and easy to use – others can be harder to handle. Consider extras such as doors, louver insets to control airflow, sun shade roller blinds, cat or dog doors and other options to provide the best custom solution for your home. Also consider the space where your canopy will go. Does it need to fit around a fireplace? Are there design challenges based on the structure of your house? We’ve seen it all and have a highly experienced engineering team that can solve challenging situations.

Oztech retractable roof systems are 100% waterproof, Wind rated to 150 kph and perfect for New Zealand climate. Control your climate, reclaim your BBQ area, make your Outdoor area usable all-year round.

2. Why choose a canopy awning?

They provide a shield from harsh outdoor elements, such as rain, wind and hail. This increases the longevity of your furniture by protecting metals from warping and fabric from fading in the summer sun. It also offers a much needed respite from harsh UV rays – filtering up to 99%.

Canopy awnings provide a safe space for children and pets to play all year round. Awnings can be used to create a whole new room, with fireplaces, kitchens, BBQs, a bar and even a hot tub all accommodated!

Our canopy rooms can be designed to fit around fireplaces. Infrared heaters can also be hung to create extra warmth. Optional side screens can also be added to block wind and rain.

Easily retractable blinds and optional OzTech retractable roof make for perfect climate control, allowing for the ultimate flexibility by using nature to both cool and heat the canopy awning room. In summer, outdoor blinds provide UV shade and can increase the effectiveness of your air conditioning unit by trapping cooled air. As the sun retreats the roofs and / or blinds can be retracted to increase ventilation from a cool evening breeze or retracted to block a cold wind. The same goes for the colder months, with blinds acting as a temporary wall to trap heat and subsequently minimise heating bills. It’s a win win for both your bank balance and the environment.

Whereas traditional conservatories lack the ventilation and flexibility to truly “bring the outdoors in”, this is where canopy awnings really come into their own. Retractable roller blinds and the retractable OzTech roof both create a completely versatile outdoor cooking space when tackling electric, open-flame cooking (i.e. barbecuing) or smoking meats. As previously mentioned, this robust PVC all-weather structure allows for a full conventional kitchen to be fitted, truly extending a dining area that is primed for entertaining.

Enjoy outdoor entertaining all year round, regardless of the weather!

The roller screens utilise Glidetrak technology with an individually adjusted spring mechanism, providing a smooth operation that makes the screen easy to lower or be raised – depending on the conditions. Using a central locking system in the bottom bar, screens are locked into place when fully down, delivering security and stability that limits wind spill and rain. For the roof, our OzTech retractable awnings are fully automated and can be connected to existing smart home systems.

To say the canopy awning build is durable is a bit of an understatement! Combining a galvanised steel frame with state-of-the-art tensioned architectural grade PVC means it can take in its stride whatever the NZ weather has in store. The tensioned PVC makes is 100% waterproof and less noisy vs. polycarbonate equivalents, eliminating creaks by not expanding and contracting on hot days and rain not drumming. It’s so tough we guarantee our fabric for at least 15 years. We cut, bend, shape and power-coat all frames in our Auckland factory using Dulux Duralloy meaning awnings are effectively protected from corrosive airbourne salt and rain. If you opt for the OzTech retractable awning roof, they are wind rated to 150 kph!

In foucs: what is Dulux Duralloy?

Durralloy is an advanced polyester thermosetting powder designed to be both durable and decorative. It is hard wearing due to being thermally stable once set, meaning intense summer temperatures will not melt or blister the surface and protection is provided from airbourne salt.

3. Where Should My Canopy Awning Be Installed?

Before asking where a canopy awning should be installed, we find it helpful to ask why you are transforming your outdoor space – this way it is fit for purpose and provides maximum satisfaction.

There is so much potential for your outdoor space and sometimes it’s difficult to know where to start. The important thing is to make the space fit for purpose. Ask yourself:

  • What do I want to use it for?
  • How can I make the outdoor space more functional, more often?
  • Will the awning get plenty of natural sunlight? If the canopy awning captures the midday sun effectively and is north-facing then heating bills will be cheaper but cooling during summer is an important consideration

In particular, make sure it is accessible and relaxing. That way you will use it more often.

We talked to Matt McIsaac from Landscape Designer Ltd about the essential elements needed to create a stunning outdoor space.

“Advances in technology means you can turn your outdoor space into almost anything, but how you want to use the space will have an influence on the decor. For example, do you want an outdoor kitchen, or a place of peace and tranquillity where you can escape to with a glass of wine at the end of a long day?”

What To Consider When Choosing The Awning Location

Although the canopy roller screens and curtains can provide complete privacy through opaque coloured PVC, proximity to neighbouring dwellings remains a key consideration for two reasons; noise and smells! If you are using the space to entertain late into the night, or smoke meat, then keeping a fair distance can minimize any complaints. The majority of our canopy designs are attached to your home or building with strong custom engineered brackets, however our canopies and awnings can also be free standing if a bit more distance is required to keep the neighbours happy!

As mentioned, the awnings are built tough with both the PVC roof / roller blinds and galvanized powder-coated steel holding firm in challenging climates. However, exposing your awning to regular extreme weather, such as gale-force winds, will limit the time you can comfortably relax in your new outdoor room. Subsequently we would recommend installing the awning where natural shelter from regular wind is provided, ideally north-facing to benefit from maximum natural light. If the awning is to be freestanding, it is important to maintain trees and other heavy bushes to limit the impact of debris.

Whether your home is heritage or contemporary, it is important to create a seamless transition between old and new to create a natural flow between your home and your new outdoor room. By design Fresco Shades canopy awnings suit most houses due to their slim and low profile structure. The steel framing is powder coated to the colour of your choice, making it easy to blend with your house’s current design. The steel frame is sturdy yet deceptively discreet, meaning the transition from original structure to new is not obvious from a distance. When a white frame and PVC fabric are used, they flawlessly blend into existing timber window frames, soffits and gutters, creating a classic and timeless look.

Complex spaces can be enclosed too! Fresco are great at thinking outside the square with their designs, and in most (but not all) cases we can provide a solution for awkward shapes. So don’t let unusual shapes and sizes become a barrier! By complex we mean the large, the small and the awkward, including advanced cornering. We use CAD design and laser-precision fabrication in our workshop to ensure the canopy flows effortlessly around the house and remains weather-tight. All our canopies are custom designed and are made to specifically fit your home. You decide the size, shape, and color of your canopy – and we take care of the rest!

In Action – Brooks Canopy Case Study

Our client had limited outdoor space with her newly built house and wanted to make the most of this area for outdoor dining and relaxing.  With extended family staying, it was imperative to make the most of every bit of space.   She needed flexible zones, that could be closed off, to extend the house and provide more areas for people to relax.

This customer had a very odd shaped angled deck and a house that stepped back twice, which made for all sorts of design challenges.  She had asked for quotes from various suppliers, but they all scratched their heads and said it can’t be done.

When we turned up, the comment was “you are our last hope”!  We took on the challenge, which required numerous design iterations and quotes, but we worked with the customer and came up with a plan that met her brief and budget.

Design challenges included the angled deck (the angled part was over 7m), step back style, and the canopy roof had to be sloped on 2 different angles to make the structure work.  CAD was used to get the precise angles and custom brackets.  Several canopy designs were used to come up with the best final result to achieve the requirements at a reasonable cost.

This project required careful attention to installation techniques, and thinking through where all the rails were to be placed because of the numerous different angles.  All the pieces had to be installed in the right order for this to work. Our customer loves her new space and went on to order side screens to enclose the space and make it more liveable year-round.

4. Choosing The Right Canopy Awning Style

Canopy Styles

All canopies are customised depending on the projects’ challenges, although some of our more popular designs are detailed below.

5. Choosing Your Outdoor Curtain / Screen Fabric

The perfect partner to our tensioned PVC roof, we use high-grade PVC to craft the roller blinds and outdoor curtains to enclose the canopy awning. Just as extra arches can be added at a later date, so can blinds and curtains – it’s the beauty of modular construction after all. There are three main styles of PVC; Clear, Mesh & Total Block. Determining the style of PVC blinds for your canopy awning comes down to three main factors; privacy, visibility & shelter.

Clear PVC

Perfect for blocking wind and rain but still allows sunshine – making it a popular choice. Harmful UV rays are still filtered.

  • Privacy: 3rd
  • Visibility: 1st
  • Shelter: 1st

Mesh PVC

90% blockage from wind, rain and sun. Allows for outward visibility whilst preventing vision back in – making it ideal for areas where increased daytime privacy is required.

  • Privacy: 2nd
  • Visibility: 2nd
  • Shelter: 2nd

Total Block PVC

Ideal when visibility (outwards or inwards) is not a requirement.

  • Privacy: 1st
  • Visibility: 3rd
  • Shelter: 1st

What Style of Fabrics Do

Customers Often Choose?

With over 15 colours to choose from there is plenty of variety (even black for ultra-privacy). Most customers choose white or off-shade white, providing optimum visibility as it’s semi-translucent and fully utilises sunlight (especially important during winter months when the sun is lower in the sky).

6. Choosing The Right Lighting Options

Lighting is essential for creating mood and ambience and, when carefully planned and installed, can dynamically transform a room and the atmosphere.

About the essential elements needed to create a stunning outdoor space – “lighting applied to water features, the fireplace and plants can create some stunning effect. I think lighting should be a part of something, like a water feature, rather than a stand-alone thing. Use fittings to keep your lighting discreet.”

Lighting options include:

  • String Lighting – excellent for overhead or along walls
  • LED Strip Lighting  – attach to your canopy arch for instant ambiance
  • Lanterns  – ideal for flexible placement
  • Uplighting – for premium decoration to illuminate walls, entrances, pools and water features
  • Installations – such as planters and furniture
fresco-canopy-led-strip-light

“I suggest you investigate LED lighting, particularly the strips, because they give great light and you hide the lights very effectively within the framework of the room. For example, strip lights on the underside of steps create a lovely up-glow or use them to subtly light your canopy roof.”

7. Heating Your Canopy Awning

Considerations for choosing a heating option for your canopy awning:

  • Fire Pits or a chiminea provide an ambient, authentic option if the Oztech retractable awning is retracted and furniture is fire-retardant and / or a safe distance from the open flame
  • It is not recommended to use a natural gas or LPG patio heater in an enclosed space – so outdoor blinds or curtains and / or the roof will need to be retracted
  • Wall-mounted heaters (gas or electric) provide an effective way to heat large spaces and are common in both residential and commercial spaces covered by canopy awnings

8. Maintenance Considerations

As a general rule a canopy should be cleaned every 3 to 6 months, depending on exposure to pollution, bugs and airborne salt. Sound like a hassle? It’s definitely not!

The unique coating technology utilized with Ferrari PVC limits the build-up of dirt and microbe growth, meaning your battles with moss are over. You don’t need any fancy equipment or harsh cleaning products either, a soft brush and household detergent are more than up to the task (and a bit of elbow grease of course!).

The same goes for the steel frame. Due to the protective powder-coating, it can also be cleaned with a soft brush and mild household detergent. If you want to use something a little more fancy, we recommend 30 Seconds Spray & Walk Away for the canopy roof (which will eliminate lichen and moss) and VuPlex for the roller screens.

We have provided a step-by-step canopy awning cleaning guide for both screens and frames and offer an awning cleaning service too.

10. Final Word

Kiwis love the outdoors so why not bring it inside? It goes without saying that a covered area is a must, preferably with side curtains – such as doors, louvres, zip curtains and Glidetrak Patio Blinds – which create

an outdoor room that cuts out the rain and cold, while still letting you enjoy the elements bathed in natural light. There are plenty of options on the market, including conservatories and pergolas but we think the flexibility of canopy awnings is unmatched.
